PostHeaderIcon A Century of Racing – The Chinese Way

In 1907, Prince Scipione Borghese won a motor race between Peking and Paris in his new Itala automobile. It took him 60 days . . . during which time he had to dismantle his car to cross mountain ranges, drive along railway tracks and suffer the heat of the infamous Gobi Desert. Seventy-eight years later, China hosted its second motor-sport event, the 555 Hong Kong Beijing Rally. The grueling 2,500-mile (4,023-kilo-metre) rally ran successfully for three years until the events of Tiananmen Square stopped Chinese motor sport in its tracks. In 1992, racing got the green light again when The Paris-Moscow-Beijing Rally recreated in reverse the original 1907 race. This time, the 10,000-mile (16,093-kilometer) blast across 11 countries, two continents, three deserts and innumerable rivers took the best drivers just 27 days. The Hong Kong –Beijing rally was rekindled a year later in 1993

PostHeaderIcon Vertical Sculling

One method of sculling while holding oneself upright in the water is to weave the hands vigorously back and forth in front of and to the sides of the body in a figure-eight movement. This forces the water downward and keeps the body up.

Another method is to drop the hands down near the hips in the water then turn the hands to about a 45-degree angle away from the body, thumbs downward. With the palms of the hands push the water away from the body. Immediately rotate the hands so that the thumbs are up. The hands now recover, pulling water toward the side of the body. When the hands reach the side they are again rotated until the thumbs are down, and the movements are repeated. The emphasis is on the push-away part of the stroke.

A third method is to place the hand palms on the water, press down on the water several feet depth, and recover again. All these methods, or combinations of them, will be useful at different times.
